Winter season – Nov – April – fly direct to Athens (we’ve used EasyJet) and then Olympic provide a twice daily service (takes around an hour) to Kefalonia –
if you arrive early morning in Athens you could use your time to take the train (station directly linked to the airport) to the Monastiraki district to have a wander around the Acropolis and surrounding Athens sights? before heading back to the airport for your evening internal flight to the island.
You can also book a bus from Athens to Patras or Killini, and then a ferry across to either Sami or Poros – again followed by a bus across the island to Argostoli.
Driving! – we have driven here via Europe, heading for either the Italian ports at Venice or Ancona to catch a cruise boat to mainland Greece (Patras) before connecting with a ferry across to Sami – takes 3-4 days in total.
Have used Ibis and Holiday Inn Express hotels throughout Europe.
